Focus on Place des Vosges
Formerly named Place Royale, Place des Vosges was designed in 1605 by Louis Métezeau, an architect for the King of France, and inaugurated in 1612 on the occasion of the engagement of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria.
Place des Vosges is the oldest square in Paris after Place Dauphine, and is among the most beautiful in the capital. Its design was based on a nearly square plan, 127 by 140 metres. The square is bordered by buildings dating to the 17th century for the most part. The square centre is currently occupied by the Louis-XIII square, surrounded by a row of trees, with 4 fountains supplied by the Ourcq canal and an equestrian statue of Louis XIII, sculpted by Charles Dupaty.
Did you know? Place des Vosges has been a listed historic monument since 1954.
