Place de la Bastille, one of the major hotspots of Paris

Indeed, it is on this site that an imposing fortification was built on the ramparts of Paris in the 14th century. Converted into a prison by Richelieu, the fortress was stormed on 14th July 1789 by residents of the suburb of Saint-Antoine. This major event marked the beginning of the French revolution.

While it has retained its symbolic character and remains the stage for many popular gatherings, the Place de la Bastille has become one of the capital’s major hotspots favoured equally by opera goers, avid shoppers and night-time revellers!

Did you know? The July Column, built in the centre of the square between 1833 and 1840, commemorates the overthrowing of the monarchy of Charles X.
